The Cape Cultural Collective’s Children’s Arts Group held its first mini-concert and mid-year awards ceremony on Saturday at Bridgeville Primary School in Athlone.
Launched in May this year, the group met weekly and brought together around 30 learners from the Athlone, Gugulethu, and Manenberg communities to develop their talents in song, dance, and drama within a supportive and nurturing environment.
True to the CCC's founding vision, the programme emphasised diversity, inclusion, and respect for different cultures. A key part of this was the use of all three local languages, with participants singing and performing in English, Afrikaans, and isiXhosa.
A dedicated team of facilitators, teachers, parents, and volunteers oversaw every aspect, from transport and safety to providing a nutritious snack each week, ensuring that no child learned on an empty stomach.
Project Manager Nurene Jassiem said the team was extremely excited about the event: “It was heartwarming to witness how these learners from such diverse communities embraced the spirit of ubuntu through their shared love for the arts. We could hardly wait to have them show their parents and the local community what they have managed to learn in just a few months.”
The children performed with energy, confidence, and joy, leaving the audience of parents and community members impressed.
