Experience the vibrant Heritage and Harmony cultural celebration at Maynardville

Weekend Argus Reporter|Updated

Capetonians are invited to come together in celebration of the nation’s diverse heritage at Heritage and Harmony, a free open-air cultural showcase taking place at the historic Maynardville on Saturday, 1 November.

Supported by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, Heritage and Harmony promises an evening of music, dance, and performance that captures the essence of South Africa’s vibrant cultural mosaic.

Hosted by acclaimed Afrikaaps Hip Hop artist and performance poet Jitsvinger (Quintin Goliath), the show will weave together powerful stories, rhythmic beats, and expressive movement under the direction of renowned producer, actor, and writer Basil Appollis.

Event organiser Azhar Salie from BMAS says the event is designed to be more than just entertainment.

Heritage and Harmony is more than a show — it’s a free celebration of our shared heritage. From the young Rieldancers of Clanwilliam to Ahneesh Valodia’s Taare Dance Troupe, representing the beauty of Indian dance, this event brings together South Africa’s incredible diversity and artistic talent. We invite everyone to come together and celebrate the heritage that unites us all,” Salie says.

The line-up features some of the country’s most celebrated artists and cultural groups, including:

  • The hauntingly beautiful music of Professor Dizu Plaatjies, whose mastery of indigenous instruments has earned international acclaim.

  • Hilton Schilder’s Goema band, providing a lively and soulful soundtrack that celebrates Cape Town’s musical legacy.

  • The evocative harmonies of Culture Shock’s Malay choir and the joyful exuberance of the Cape Minstrels, tracing the story of resilience and freedom.

  • Stirring performances by Xoliswa Tom, Siphesihle Mdena, and Bradley van Sitters, alongside the angelic voices of the Joyful Harmonies Choir.

  • Dynamic gumboot dancers and modern interpretations of Khoi, San, and Nama Stap dances by the Figure of 8 Dance Collective.

  • Award-winning breakdancers from Mitchells Plain, closing the evening with an electrifying display of contemporary street culture.

Before the main performance, audiences can enjoy a lively cultural festival featuring local artisans and musicians. Gates open at 4pm, and attendees can indulge in a delectable array of food from various food trucks, offering everything from local favourites to global flavours — the perfect way to start an evening of celebration under the stars.

Heritage and Harmony celebrates both tradition and innovation,” Salie adds. “It’s about showcasing the incredible talent and creativity that thrive in every corner of our country — and reminding us of the pride, joy, and unity that define who we are.”

Admission to the event is free, but seating is limited. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis via Quicket.co.za. Entry will only be permitted with a valid Quicket ticket.

Don’t miss this spectacular evening of heritage, culture, and unity — a musical and visual journey that promises to uplift, inspire, and celebrate what it means to be South African.
