In just a few weeks, the landscape of entrepreneurship and innovation in Africa is poised to transform dramatically with the launch of SWEAT Africa, the continent’s first experiential start-up and venture festival. Nestled within the stunning Bertha Retreat between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, this inaugural event promises to weave together students, entrepreneurs, investors, and innovators into a vibrant tapestry of collaboration and opportunity.
Born from a serendipitous moment during a 14 km mountain run in the Cape Epic, where a group of young founders engaged with angel investors from tech giants like Google and OpenAI,SWEAT Africa, which stands for Students Working to Empower African Talent, emerged as a bold vision. Inspired by the momentum of Finland's Slush festival, this unique gathering promises not just to showcase innovation, but to ignite genuine connections and transformative discussions.
SWEAT Africa aims to bring a wealth of talent to one central stage, with top universities in South Africa, including Stellenbosch University, University of Cape Town, and University of the Witwatersrand, sending their leading start-ups to attend. Furthermore, approximately 100 international investors and founders are set to engage, as the festival will also host the renowned Open StartUp BRAIN 5.0 accelerator programme in partnership with the prestigious MIT Executive Programme. This unprecedented convergence highlights Africa as a leading global hub for innovation.
The festival will showcase over 100 start-ups alongside 50 venture capitalists and investors. As Professor Tulio de Oliveira, co-founder of SWEAT, aptly states, “When one puts founders and investors together with the top universities, that’s where real innovation starts.”
Intentionally crafted to diverge from traditional conference formats, SWEAT Africa offers curated networking experiences, pitch sessions, and storytelling opportunities that enable deep collaboration. The programme includes innovative features such as the Pitchin’ Picnics, a chance for investment-ready startups to shine, and engaging panel discussions inspired by contemporary formats to share insights on the challenges and victories of building deep-tech ventures in Africa.
Co-organiser Houda Ghozzi of Open Startup expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “We love the idea of African organisations teaming up to promote science-led ventures. This will showcase the momentum for African Deep Tech, and that Africans are ready to SWEAT for it!”
One of SWEAT Africa's primary objectives is fostering a sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystem. By facilitating access to funding, mentorship, and collaboration, the festival aims to equip participants with the tools needed to elevate their ventures to international standards. As Prof Lynn Morris from the University of the Witwatersrand noted, “Africa’s next generation of founders should not have to leave the continent to access world-class support.”
Through targeted matchmaking and shared experiences, participants will engage directly with investors and industry leaders, forging pathways to success and empowering the next wave of innovators. Dr Richard Gordon from the South African Medical Research Council emphasizes the cardinal need for connections within Africa's start-up landscape, saying, “Africa’s biggest gap for startups is funding. SWEAT brings together all key players in the ecosystem and gives startups an opportunity to showcase their business ideas to a multitude of different investors.”
Beyond the formal programming, SWEAT Africa champions community-building through cultural immersion, outdoor runs, shared meals, and informal networking activities. Co-organiser Ross Vermeulen encapsulates this by stating, “We’re designing an environment where connection happens naturally – through movement, conversation, and time spent together.” This ethos reinforces that lasting collaborations are built not only on ideas but also on shared experiences and commitment.
SWEAT Africa is more than a festival; it is a call to action for anyone passionate about shaping the future of Africa’s entrepreneurial landscape. With tickets in high demand and opportunities for inclusivity ensured, this gathering beckons a diverse audience keen on exploring Africa's evolving tech ecosystem.
