South African music star DJ Black Coffee is still taking in the success of his landmark performance at London’s The O2 after delivering one of the biggest shows of his career.
The Grammy Award-winning DJ and producer, whose real name is Nkosinathi Maphumulo, headlined a sold-out three-hour Afropolitan House set on Friday, 22 May, blending electronic music with a live orchestra, choir and a host of special guest appearances, including Alicia Keys.
Days after the performance, Black Coffee took to Instagram to thank fans who packed out the arena and helped bring his vision to life.
“This past Friday has left me speechless. Every small detail put together created an absolute dream, from the special guests to the orchestra then the choir and surprises sprinkled throughout. This one came from the heart, London. Thank you for joining me on this journey at the @theo2london,” he wrote.
For Black Coffee, the performance marked another major milestone in a journey that has seen him grow from playing intimate venues to headlining some of the world’s biggest stages.
Speaking to BBC ahead of the concert, the producer described London as a city that played a significant role in shaping his international career.
He revealed that performing at the main O2 Arena had long been a personal goal after previously playing smaller venues within the complex.
The show itself was designed specifically with London audiences in mind.
Known for its rich club culture and close connection to dance music, the city provided the perfect backdrop for Black Coffee’s ambitious fusion of house music, orchestral arrangements and live performances.
The production featured a full orchestra alongside the DJ set, creating a unique live experience that moved between electronic beats and live instrumentation.
Fans were also treated to a surprise appearance from singer Alicia Keys, who joined Black Coffee during the sold-out show.
Reflecting on the experience afterwards, the "In Common" singer shared her own message of appreciation for the London crowd.
“London, I love you so much!! You always bring that fresh energyyyyyy. Moments like this is what it’s all about!!! I loved surprising you, London!! Big love to my brother @realblackcoffee for our very first performance of one of my favourite songs!!,” she wrote on Instagram.
The sold-out performance comes as Black Coffee continues to cement his place as one of South Africa’s most successful global music exports.
Over the years, he has consistently appeared at leading international festivals, clubs and arenas, contributing to the global introduction of Afropolitan House music.
