“Working with you is always a solid yes.”
These are the words exchanged between global dance music icons Black Coffee and David Guetta as they reflected on their creative partnership.
In a recent episode of DJ Mag’s "The Green Room", the two producers sat down for an in-depth conversation about their collaboration, musical differences, and the art of producing timeless tracks.
Guetta spoke warmly about their working relationship, highlighting the magic behind their joint effort on "Drive".
“That record we made together is so special. We should definitely do it again,” he said.
He also explained how their contrasting musical tastes actually enhance their collaborations.
“I thought that it was interesting that when we worked together on 'Drive', I would tend to go a little bit in this direction, or you would tend to go in another direction.
"But if we find something that you and me love, then we know this is it. It’s probably not something you would do on your own and not something I would do on my own - and I think that is fascinating.”
Released on August 24, 2018, and featuring Delilah Montagu, "Drive" has since become a club anthem, celebrated for its blend of Afro-house and electronic dance elements.
Beyond reflecting on their success, Black Coffee offered valuable advice to aspiring DJs and producers, stressing the importance of musical diversity and strong foundations.
“I say this to young DJs - if you listen to any artist today that is successful, and you listen to their interviews, they get asked: ‘Who did you grow up listening to?’ It’s always the same people,” he said.
He pointed to legendary influences such as Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, noting that exposure to soul music plays a crucial role in shaping well-rounded artists.
“Anyone who grew up listening to that - that’s a good foundation to write a good song, to produce a good song.
So you cannot be a house music DJ that only listens to house music and expect to have depth in your production and songwriting.”
