Ne-Yo is speaking out about how his personal life may be affecting his professional one, saying his polyamorous relationship has cost him work opportunities.

The R&B singer, whose real name is Shaffer Chimere Smith, lives with his partners Arielle Hill, Cristina and Moneii along with their children.

Speaking on the "Sorry We’re Cyrus" podcast hosted by Tish Cyrus and Brandi Cyrus, he explained that public reaction to his relationship has not been without consequences.

“The world is mad at the fact that I’m in a polyamorous relationship,” he said during the interview, adding that some industry opportunities have fallen through because people are unsure about supporting that aspect of his life.

He suggested that public figures can be accepted until they make choices that do not align with what audiences expect, which can then affect how they are perceived professionally.

Ne-Yo pushed back against the idea that his lifestyle should overshadow his talent or character, saying it does not make sense that personal choices can lead to professional rejection when respect and consistency are still present.

In earlier interviews, he had described his relationship as a family unit built on love and commitment rather than public assumptions.

He has repeatedly said that the focus is on community and shared responsibility, not just how it is interpreted from the outside.

He also noted that much of the misunderstanding comes from how people immediately assume the nature of polyamory, saying many reduce it to physical assumptions instead of seeing the emotional and relational structure behind it.

The "So Sick" singer recently marked a three-year milestone with his partners, sharing a reflective Instagram post celebrating their journey together.

He described their relationship as something real and evolving, shaped by both good and difficult moments, but strengthened over time.

"Most can only imagine what it feels like to wake up smiling every morning, walking into whatever the day may bring loving life, knowing your team is strong and the love is real.

"To most it can only be a fantasy. BUT IT’S OUR REALITY. And I recognise you all as the blessings you are," he wrote.

Ne-Yo’s openness continues to spark conversation around modern relationships and how they are received in public spaces, especially when personal choices intersect with fame, branding and industry expectations.
