Durban University of Technology graduate Nonsikelelo Mhlongo has shared her story of resilience after overcoming gender-based violence and personal hardship to earn her Diploma in Business and Information Management.

Mhlongo broke down in tears as she crossed the graduation stage during DUT’s Autumn Graduation ceremony.

Originally from Mtunzini, Mhlongo endured four years of physical and emotional abuse while raising her two children.

The abuse became a major obstacle during her studies and, at one stage, she was hospitalised for a month after an assault during her examination period, forcing her to miss exams while recovering.

Despite the trauma, she continued with her studies and remained determined to complete her qualification.

Mhlongo said the support of her parents helped her rebuild her life and continue pursuing her education.

“My parents never gave up on me. They supported me during my darkest moments and took care of my children so I could continue studying. This graduation is for them,” she said.

Her academic journey at DUT began in 2021 when she enrolled for a Higher Certificate in Public Relations before later pursuing a Diploma in Business and Information Management.

She now plans to further her studies and contribute positively to her community.

Her mother, Ntombenhle Mhlongo, said watching her daughter graduate was an emotional moment.

“Seeing my daughter graduate after everything she has been through was very emotional for me. I am proud that she never gave up on her studies,” she said.

Mhlongo also encouraged other survivors of gender-based violence to seek support and leave abusive relationships before it is too late.
