South Africans can expect another active day of weather on Thursday, with severe thunderstorms forecast across large parts of the central interior as unstable conditions trigger widespread showers and storm activity.

The highest rain chances of 80% are expected over much of the central interior, including large parts of the Free State and Northern Cape, where intense thunderstorms could bring torrential downpours, frequent lightning and damaging winds.

A broader band of 60% rain chances stretches across the southern and eastern interior, while 30% rain chances are expected in parts of the Eastern Cape, the KwaZulu-Natal coast, Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

Fine and dry conditions will persist over much of the Western Cape and the far northeastern parts of the country.

The South African Weather Services (SAWS) has issued an Orange Level 6 warning for severe thunderstorms over parts of the Northern Cape and Free State, warning of heavy downpours, strong damaging winds, localised flooding and possible infrastructure damage.

A Yellow Level 4 warning remains in place for surrounding areas of the central interior for similar storm risks, though with slightly lower severity.

Along the KwaZulu-Natal coast, a Yellow Level 1 warning for damaging waves remains in effect between Richards Bay and Kosi Bay, where rough seas may disrupt small vessels and beachfront activities.

Residents in affected storm-prone areas are urged to remain alert, secure loose outdoor items and avoid flooded roads.
